Elder Services

In her novel Emma, Jane Austen wrote, “"There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort."

This is at the core of our mission at O’Connell Care at Home. Our elder service providers are trained to address the unique interests and needs of senior clients who would rather age at home instead of having to move to a care facility.

It is our goal to engage our older clients with meaningful experiences that will enrich their lives, while giving families peace of mind that their aging loved one is being cared for.

Our elder services include:

  • Ensuring that the person aging at home is safe in his or her familiar environment; that stoves and faucets are turned off, there are no obstacles in the client’s way
  • Acting as the client’s advocate and seeing that their wishes are being respected
  • Banking, bill paying, and other financial assistance
  • Caring for clients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia or degenerative conditions
  • Providing respite care for family caregivers
  • Helping reduce the older client’s risk of a fall
  • Watching for changes in health
  • Helping with the activities of daily living
  • Running errands
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Helping with mobility and transfers, such as getting into and out of bed and chairs and moving around the house
  • Escorting clients on visits to doctors, community and senior centers, adult day care, and to see friends and relatives
  • Picking up prescriptions and medications
  • Shopping for and preparing meals and seeing that the senior is getting proper nutrition
  • Assisting with personal care, such as bathing, grooming, dressing, mouth care, toileting, and hygiene
  • Seeing that self-administered medications are being take properly
  • Arranging non-medical, non-emergency transportation
  • Coordinating visits from skilled nurses and home health aides, as well as geriatric care managers
  • Caring for issues related to incontinence
  • Reading email or letters
  • Changing linens
  • Doing laundry and ironing
  • Organizing closets
  • Watering house plants
  • Making phone calls

Whether we are with our older clients for a couple of hours three times a week or 24 hours a day, O’Connell’s elder care experts will act as advisors, advocates, coordinators of care, and surrogate family members.

Friends who help aging individuals feel independent as possible and like the person they have always been.

Geriatric Care Managers

We are a second set of hands for individuals, families, and caregivers. A professional geriatric care manager, who understands all facets of caregiving, can assist as your guide, advocate, and coordinator. Families challenged by distance from their loved one or by work circumstances which prevent them from being full-time caregivers find this resource especially helpful.
